The North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has placed the country’s troops on high alert, threatening “indiscriminate strikes” if South Korea doesn’t stop its propaganda broadcasts over the border by Saturday evening.

During an emergency meeting of the North Korean central military commission, Kin Jong-un reportedly ordered the North’s army to be “fully operational and ready for any military action at any time” from 5pm Friday local time, also putting the area along the border with the South “in a semi-state of war,” North Korean state media reported.

North Korea also delivered an ultimatum to the South demanding it stop broadcasting propaganda via loudspeakers across the two countries’ borders and setting a deadline of 5 pm on Saturday. The North threatened with ‘imminent’ military action if the demands aren’t met by Seoul.

“Psychological warfare against [North Korea] is, in essence, an open act of war against it,” North Korea’s state-run KCNA news agency said in a statement on Friday. –RT

Yonhap: WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (Yonhap) — U.S. President Barack Obama has been kept abreast of the situation on the Korean Peninsula even as he’s on vacation, a White House official said Saturday.

“The president has been kept up-to-date on developments on the Korean Peninsula,” a White House official said, according to a pool report. “As the State Department has said, we remain steadfast in our commitment to our alliance with South Korea, with whom we will continue to coordinate closely.”

Obama, who has been on vacation since early this month, is scheduled to get back to work Monday.

Top officials of South and North Korea have been holding high-level talks at the border village of Panmunjom to defuse tensions that have risen dramatically after an exchange of artillery fire across their border earlier this week.
