Israel Police Stops Palestinian Stabbing Attack in Jerusalem

By

JERUSALEM, Israel – Israeli police said they shot and killed a Palestinian woman who attempted to stab officers in Jerusalem’s Old City on Thursday.

Authorities say the woman approached officers near the Temple Mount around 6:30 a.m.

“After she approached them, she drew a knife and attempted to stab the officers at the scene, who responded by shooting at her,” police said in a statement. “Medical personnel who arrived at the scene pronounced her dead.”

Palestinian media reported that she was from a town near the city of Jenin in the West Bank – biblical Judea and Samaria.

It is unclear how the woman entered Israel.

Tensions have increased in Jenin following the escape by Palestinian prisoners from an Israeli prison earlier this month. Israeli police said Thursday morning that Israeli troops were involved in an overnight gun battle with a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group near Jenin.

The Palestinian gunman opened fire on Israeli soldiers during a riot in the village of Burqin, according to police.

Israeli security authorities said they were cracking down on a Hamas terror cell believed to be in the West Bank.

On Sunday, Israel’s military said it carried out a series of raids targeting Hamas in the West Bank. Five Palestinians were killed and two Israeli troops were seriously injured during the raids.
