North Carolina’s 12-week abortion ban takes effect with revisions after Planned Parenthood lawsuit

RALEIGH, North Carolina (LifeSiteNews) – North Carolina’s new ban on most abortions at 12 weeks will be allowed to take effect thanks to legislative revisions meant to address some of the objections raised by an abortion industry lawsuit, a federal judge has ruled.

In May, North Carolina’s Republican-controlled legislature enacted Senate Bill 20 over the veto of Democrat Gov. Roy Cooper. Slated to take effect in July, the new law as originally written bans elective surgical abortions after 12 weeks and chemical abortions after 10, forbids distributing abortion drugs by mail, imposes a three-day waiting period on abortions, and requires women be offered an ultrasound of their baby, among other regulations. 

Planned Parenthood South Atlantic filed a lawsuit claiming that several provisions of the law are vague and contradictory, leaving abortionists without a clear understanding of what is and is not permitted. In response, the Associated Press reports, GOP lawmakers passed new legislation clarifying what North Carolina Right to Life describes as “minor inconsistencies.”
