The United States and Canada over the weekend, at the G7 Summit, escalated trade tensions between the two countries as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was called out for being dishonest.
White House Aid Peter Navarro stated in support of President Trump to Fox News Sunday: “There is a special place in hell for any leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door, and that’s what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference, that’s what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did.”
In addition, White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of “polarizing” statements on trade policy that risked making the United States look weak ahead of the North Korean summit.
At issue between the two countries are tariffs and statements by both nations leaders. The United States last week re-issued tariffs against allies in the attempt of trying to make trade somewhat reciprocal. However, the latest escalation in the dispute comes as President Trump revoked his endorsement of communique which the other nations agreed too.
“The United States will not allow other countries to impose massive Tariffs and Trade Barriers on its farmers, workers, and companies,” President Trump stated.
“While sending their product into our country tax-free. We have put up with Trade Abuse for many decades — and that is long enough.”
After President Trump left the G7 meeting for Singapore to meet with Kim Jung Un, Prime Minister Trudeau gave a press conference where he spoke of retaliatory measures that Canada would take in July as a response to Trump’s decision to add tariffs on steel and aluminum.
Canada is uniquely vulnerable to US tariffs as roughly seventy-five percent of Canadian exports go directly to the United States.
President Donald Trump on Twitter gave an example of the unfair trade deals that are currently in place while also making known his aggravation with the Canadian Prime Minister.
“PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, “US Tariffs were kind of insulting” and he “will not be pushed around.” Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!”
