New Gallup Poll numbers indicate that for the first time in decades, Democrats favor socialism over capitalism. Up until 2018, the polls showed that roughly half of those affiliated with the democratic party felt positive about socialism, now, in 2018, the Democratic view of socialism is beginning to break away.

In 2010, it was dead even on the left flank of American politics, however, in just over eight years, more than fifty-seven percent claim to favor socialism compared to the forty-seven percent who ascribe to capitalism.

The poll was conducted from July thirtieth to August fifth and is of importance because many are claiming that the left is moving in the direction of socialism.

Regardless of the left’s tilt, Republicans on the other hand strongly favor capitalism; the polls indicate that over seventy-one percent of Republicans prefer capitalism, while only sixteen percent favor socialism.

The Gallup poll numbers actively show that the left is pulling away from mainstream American economics and are leaning further left, which explains the enormous amount of disdain currently being displayed towards anyone with an opposing view.

Socialists have historically utilized similar tactics to the ones currently being deployed by the Left today. Instead of engaging in a grounded discussion, many on the left are using emotion to justify their views.

The result of the aforementioned results in an increased barrier to formally debate political matters and in general to house a discussion with the opposing party.

To further indicate the tilt of voters on both sides, Gallup the wording of the question did not define “socialism” or “capitalism” but simply asked respondents whether their opinion of each was positive or negative.

The polls further displayed that the younger generations are increasingly viewing capitalism in a negative light. In fact, fewer than half of young Americans see capitalism positively.

“Americans aged 18 to 29 are as positive about socialism (51%) as they are about capitalism (45%). This represents a 12-point decline in young adults’ positive views of capitalism in just the past two years and a marked shift since 2010, when 68% viewed it positively. Meanwhile, young people’s views of socialism have fluctuated somewhat from year to year, but the 51% with a positive view today is the same as in 2010.” – Gallup
