Communists around the world celebrated Karl Marx's 200th birthday on Saturday, May 5th. Someone whose ideology contributed and shaped communist regimes like the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, regimes that killed more than 100 million people, is being honored by news outlets like Huffington Post and the Los Angeles Times.
Last week, Chinese social media users began noticing that they couldn’t find Bibles listed on some of their nation’s most popular e-commerce platforms. Shoppers who searched the word Bible on retailers such as Taobao, Jingdong, Dang Dang, and Amazon.cn began receiving a “no results” response, reported the South China Morning Post.
The most recent documented act of Christian persecution in China occurred on the 9th of March when Chinese authorities forced their way into Shangqiu Catholic Church South Cathedral in Henan Province to turn off the electricity and forcibly close priests and nuns in the building while they used a crane to remove crosses.
While the specter of a nuclear war with North Korea has faded in recent weeks, China is not taking chances, and ahead of the Winter Olympics in South Korea, the Chinese government has deployed 300,000 troops and multiple mobile strike groups to its highly-guarded border with North Korea, a move which signals that Beijing is quietly gearing for a potential crisis between Kim Jong Un and the United States in the coming months.
