House to Debate Contempt of Congress Against Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows

Former President Donald Trump’s Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows is one step closer to facing criminal charges – after failing to comply with subpoenas to testify on the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

As lawmakers question top Trump aides about conspiring to overturn the 2020 election, Washington D.C Attorney General Karl Racine sued those he says were behind the event.

In fact, it’s been almost 50 years since a White House chief of staff was criminally charged.

This time around, the future of Mark Meadows hangs in the balance of a House vote. If he is charged with contempt, it’ll be the first time a chief of staff has faced criminal prosecution since Watergate.

Before Meadows chose to stop cooperating, he handed investigators thousands of texts, emails, and documents. Those are being used as evidence, raising more questions about his involvement in the days leading up to January 6th.

Monday, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) read tests from Donald Trump’s oldest son and Fox News hosts Sean Hannity and Lauren Ingraham while calling on Meadows to urge Trump to call off the mob.

“Did Donald Trump, through action or inaction, corruptly seek to obstruct or impede Congress’s official processing to count electoral vote?” Cheney asked during Tuesday’s House Rules Committee.

After two committee votes, the decision is now up to the full House.

If the House votes to prosecute, Meadows will have to answer questions on the non-privileged evidence he’s already handed over. Tuesday night’s vote will come after months of negotiations and difficulties getting Trump aids to cooperate.

That includes Trump adviser Stephen Bannon, who was charged with two counts of contempt in November. Bannon pled not guilty.

Racine also filed the first civil lawsuit resulting from January 6th.

The suit is against groups known as the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, plus more than 30 of their leaders for conspiring to terrorize the people of D.C.
